Design & Emotion @ IASDR conference Delft
A year after Chicago and a year before London, it seems our community is desperate to have an event in between the bi-annual D&E conferences.
At the coming IASDR conference in Delft, October 31 - November 4, a full parallel session running for three days is devoted to Design & Emotion presentations, 32 in total! You can download the full programme here: http://www.iasdr2011.org/?id=3
In memoriam - Kees Overbeeke (1952-2011)
Today we heard the sad news that Prof. Kees Overbeeke passed away unexpectedly this weekend. Kees was a key scientist in the 'experience design' community and one of the founding fathers of the Design & Emotion Society.
We remember him with great honor and will never forget his commitment to our cause and passion for life.

IDE Alumni drinks: Design & Experience book launch
Jan. 27th, Delft, The Netherlands - In this seminar, several speakers will discuss 'experience-driven design' from both a research and a practice perspective. In addition, this seminar celebrates the publication of the book "From Floating Wheelchairs to Mobile Car Parks; a collection of 35 experience-driven design projects". The book presents 35 IDE graduation projects in which user experience played a central role (for more information about the book, see below). The event is organised by the IDE Alumnus Society, and is open for anyone who is interested in experience-driven design. The seminar concludes with a network reception.

CFP 4th World Conference on Design Research
On behalf of IASDR2011, we are pleased to invite you to the 4th World Conference on Design Research. The conference will take place 31 October to 4 November 2011 in the Aula Congress Centre of Delft University of Technology.
Official invitation:The theme of IASDR2011 is DIVERSITY and UNITY. The conference aims to provide a unique global forum for the presentation and discussion of research into fundamental aspects of design activity and experience across all domains of application, including industrial design, architectural design and planning, different branches of engineering design, software, interaction and media design, etc.
The submission of proposals for papers closes on 4 February For more information see http://www.iasdr2011.org
DPPI 11 – Call for Papers Now Open
Politecnico di Milano INDACO Department, in association with ACM SIGCHI is pleased to announce DPPI 11, The Fifth International Conference on Desinging Pleasurable Products and Interfaces. DPPI 11 is now calling for paper submissions on relevant themes and tracks. This year the main topic revolves around: How design research could serve industry.
Important dates:15th September 2010 - Call opens
30th January 2011 - Call closes
22nd June 2011- Conference starts
25th June 2011 - Conference ends
About DPPI 11
The aim of DPPI 2011 is to invite the design community to discuss, consider, explore and debate about possible directions and benefits that industry could obtain from a more suitable integration of design research.
THE CALL - In these days a mantra for companies and institutions seems to be, almost mandatorily, the need to become design-oriented, in order to
increase their capability to build value, generate innovation and increase market shares as well as profits. This mantra, more often than not, comes with another one: design innovation is putting the user at the center of the project. Research on pleasurable products and interfaces is playing an important role in this debate elaborating and formalizing new knowledge on people (end users, value co-producers, etc.) and their needs,
expectations, beliefs, values, desires; and suggesting the possibility to exploit user centered design in sectors and markets that are not commonly
thought as being inherent its field of research. This has produced a significant amount of knowledge, mainly through vast experimentation, whereas less has been said on how to integrate this knowledge in industry. Apparently there is a disconnection between research on user centered design and pleasurability, and design practices inside industry, especially in SMEs contexts. Given these premises, it would be very interesting to investigate how this research can be integrated into industry, and to discuss it in relation to other approaches to design innovation.
FUNDEMENTIAL QUESTIONS - DPPI 2011 aims at investigating fundamental questions around this debate such as: Which is the relation between
current user-centered design research and other design-driven innovation approaches, which seem closer to the practices of industry? Are there any
support mechanisms that industry could provide in order to exploit this design research? What is the extent to which this design research can be
practically exploited inside contemporary industry contexts? What is the difference between incremental innovation and disruptive innovation and
how does design research on people relates with them? What about the idea that user centered design cannot face the problem of designing
innovation? And finally, which are the evidences that being user centered could lead companies to higher levels of innovation and competitiveness?
TRACKS & DEADLINES - Participants are encouraged to submit proposals that focus on 1. Innovative ways to explore UCD, 2.Industries engaging
users in design, 3.Modes and aesthetics of interaction, 4.Design culture and thinking in industry, 5. Organizing design in industry, 6.Service Design and interactions
DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM - Invites participants to work through aesthetic issues in their on-going doctoral work. Participants are expected to write a short position paper about their research, and prepare a 15-minute presentation, focusing on explaining their research, how aesthetics figures in their thinking and how they plan to work with aesthetics.

About DPPI Conferences
At each edition, DPPI - Designing Pleasurable Products and Interfaces Conference welcomes contributions that explore new developments around
user experiences, design innovation, design tools, design knowledge and design visions for industries, encouraging conceptual contributions backed
up with designs, empirical and innovative research that builds on user experiences, design culture and system designs that extend our knowledge on user experience research to bring new theoretical knowhow and models so that better, pleasurable products and interfaces will be developed in the future.
